About Sandi Smith
Sandi's StoryMy entrepreneurial story starts when I was laid off in the slowdown of the early 1990's. The next 3 years were really angst for me. I couldn't get a job. I looked for a job for a while, but my heart wasn't into it, and I felt like I was fighting an uphill battle. At the same time, I was too scared to start my own business; I was frozen in inaction. It petrified me to have to earn and be responsible for my own paycheck. Even though I had part-time business ventures going on the side since I was 13, I had always had a corporate job with a steady paycheck. I started volunteering, procrastinating making any career move whether it was to get another job or start a business. I was also going through a divorce, so "a man was not a plan," as they say. The severance, unemployment money, and my savings were running out fast, and I had to do something pretty soon. I finally got a break training people on computers. I became one of the most reluctant entrepreneurs in history. Most of my clients in the first five to six years came to me and asked me to do things: write books, give speeches, teach a class, fix their QuickBooks, and develop a web site. After a few years of doing a variety of services for clients and burning out really fast, I discovered I loved the mix of skills required in creating web sites. But I was missing a big required skill: marketing. I knew that in order to do the web sites right, I had to know marketing. I knew NOTHING about marketing. I had to learn marketing and learn it fast. One of the first sites I did was a Toastmasters club site. We got so many new members from that site, everyone was shocked. I then took a paying client, and hours after we got the site up, they called me and said they already got business. I took another client and the same thing happened. I was excited! I looked back over what I did, and found the formula so I could repeat it for more clients. After hundreds of sites and millions of dollars in new business for my clients, the rest is history. Today what I love to do is help professionals who are what I call "reluctant marketers." I can relate to them 110%! I wish there had been someone to help me in the 1990s. For three years, I was a reluctant entrepreneur and for eight years, I was a reluctant marketer. But then I got it. And now I help my clients get and retain more clients, boost their revenues, and exponentially grow their businesses.
